WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

Thk ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held yesterday afternoon at the Pahnerston Buildings. There were present: Messrs. A. Bruce (in the chair), O'Neill, bishop, Sinclair, McLeod, McKay, Thomson, and Moffatt. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Relief Works.---A. telegram from the Public Works Otliee was read, stating that the Government had made a further •Ijrant of £500 for relief works for unemployed in Wnitakerei district, on the same terms as the previous grant, and a conv of agreement to be signed was also forwarded. A deputa.tation of residents at Swanson presented a letter praying that the largest snare of the grant should be expended in their district. A petition from 144 residents in the Waikomiti district asked that a deviation be made for the Waikomiti-Matiukau Road through the Church endowment. Mr. K. T. Dufaur wrote, asking that a road be laid out to the Waitakerei Native Block. Messrs. J. Oil worth and W. Burton wrote requesting that a portion of the grant should be appropriated to the road to Waitakerei from the railway station. Mr. R. Monk, the member for the district, was present, and stated that in consequence of a petition received from the residents of Swanson, asking that aid be given to their portion of the district, lie had applied to Mr. Mitchelson, Minister of Public Works, who stated that he could not send any at present, but would shortly do so. The money now had come, and he considered that it had been specially given in response to his application on behalf of the Swanson people. The Chairman said they had got a similar grant previously for specific works, and he thought that the second instalment was for the continuation of those works. Mr. O'Neill moved that the Swanson —West Coast Road and a branch line to the Falls be made, and that the balance of the grant, if any, be expended on the Waikomiti and Henderson main road. Mr. McLeod seconded. Mr. McKay moved, as an amendment, that the be allocated in the following manner : Waikomiti—West 'oast Road, lOU; Henderson Valley Road, £100; Swanson —West Coast Road, '•'l.'iO ; Waitakerei —West Coast Road, 1 50. Waimauku Road Deviation. — A letter from Mr. ,J.H. Upton, ottering to allow the road to l>e deviated through his property at Waimauku, was read. The otter was accepted with thanks. T.AtJi'AKI Road.—A reouest for repairs by Mr. J. Johnston to this road was deferred because of want of funds. Slaughterhouse Lioense. —An application was received from Christian Jensen, for permission to slaughter on his property at Ararinni North. Granted. Engineer's Report. — This report was read, and dealt with seriatim. Tenders were authorised to be called for repairs to Crook's Road, Birkenhead. Concerning an outfall drain complained of by Mr. Chaytor, of Birkenhead, the engineer was empowered to complete the necessary improvements. An application for a culvert near Waitakerei station, which was recommended, was granted, and tenders ordered to be called. Repairs to the Waimauku-Waikoukou Road, which were urgent, were authorised to the extent of £5. Works applied for on Perrott and Wilson's Road, Henderson, were deferred till January. In regard to the Wainui-Kaukapakapa Road, it was decided that steps be taken under the Public Works Act to take over a portion of Mr. Klias' land, tccarrv this road through to Kaukapakapa. FinAnce Committer's Report.—This was read, and showed that the receipts for the month were £580 1/s (id, and the expenditure £160 Ss 9d, while the total indebtedness of the county was now £1260 17s 9d. The question of reducing the overdraft was discussed at some length, and Mr. Sinclair moved, and Mr. McLeod seconded, " That no further works be undertaken by the Council unless necessitated bv emergency until the overdraft be paid. The ordinary accounts were passed for payment. Takapuna Wharf.—Mr. C. S. George wrote, asking that the Council prepare plans for the erection of a wharf, and estimates of its cost, and also state how much they would contribute towards it. The engineer was instructed to prepare estimates, etc. Several otlier matters of minor importance were dealt with, and the meeting closed. RETRENCHMENT, In order to meet the times, W. H.
