THE MINERS' STRIKE.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Sydney, September 4. Thirty vessels have discharged their crews in consequence of the Newcastle strike. One of the principal Southern coal mines was discovered to be on fire today, and it is suspected that some of the men on strike are concerned in the affair. The fire was fortunately extinguished before much damage was done. Owing to the exertions of the Minister of Lands, a conference between the coal masters and miners on the matters in dispute has been arranged. The miners in the Southern district have demanded from the masters an increase of rates paid for hewing coal, and it is feared that unless the request is conceded the men will go out on strike. Melbourne, September 4. There are now fully a thousand wharf hands out of employment, owing to the Newcastle strike.
