LOST AT MERCURY BAY.
*■ — THE SEARCH FOR MR. GUMMING ABANDONED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPOND EXT. ] Hamilton, Tuesday. All hope of finding Mr. William Gumming, formerly of Hamilton, lost last Saturday fortnight in the bush at Mercury Bay, while prospecting, is at an end. Mr. William Cussen, the surveyor, a brother-in-law of the missing man, -who rode through from Taupo to Hamilton on receipt of the intelligence, on Tuesday week last proceeded with Mr. Gummings' son to Mercury Bay. On arrival there he organised strong search parties, and used every endeavour to find traces of Mr. Gumming. He telegraphs to-day to his brother, Air. Laurence Cussen, here, that parties consisting of fourteen men altogether have been out searching every day since his arrival at Mercury Bay, and having found no trace of Mr. Cumming, the search has been abandoned as hopeless. There are many old shafts sunk and grown over with bush, down which it is quite possible he may have fallen. This is the theory of many who know that part of the country, and is a very likely one.
