RIFLE MATCH.
— A rifle match took place last Saturday, between teams of fifteen men from the I Gordon Rifles of this city and the City Rifles of Wellington, each corps firing on its own range. As will be seen from the scores below, it resulted in a victory for the Wellington men by 55 points. These corps may be looked upon as amongst the best shooting companies of the colony, and it was expected that the result of this match would have been much closer. Some of the Gordon's best men. however, failed to make anything near their average, and this, coupled with the fact that several short cartridges were used, may in a measure account for the large majority in favour of Wellington. We understand a return match is likely to be arranged for an early date. Mr. Cato, late of the Queen's Own, acted as referee for the Wellington men, and Lieutenant Davy, Petone Xavals, for the Gordons. The following are the scores :— GORDON RIFLES. Tl. Tl.
