DR. HECTOR AND THE THAMES GOLDFIFLDS.
TO TUB EDITOR. Sir, — Permit me to thank Messrs. Mackny and Ring for their very clear statements of Dr. Hector's views in regard to the Thames gold fields, which are in entire accordance with my own recollections of his expressed views. How far these support " l J ollex's " assertion that Dr. H. *' declared that there was no gold in the Thames district," and . . "proved that by no possibility could gold over be found there," 1 leave your readers to judge. As for " l'ollex's" attempt in Saturday's paper to " smudge" me, and to excuse his statement as mere " badinage," I also leave those to the judgment of your readers: and thanking you fur the space you have afforded me in defence of an absent man. —lam, etc., Thomas B. Gillies.
