The opening class in a course of French lessons for ladies was opened by Mr. C. D. Whitcombe yesterday afternoon, in the schoolroom adjacent to St. David's Church, Symonds-street. As originally announced! the class opened is an elementary one, but all the ladies present showed such proficiency in the language—the result of study under previous masters—that it was decided to carry it on in future as an intermediate class, confining the elementary portion to pronunciation only. Accordingly, at 3.15 on Monday next, the class will open as intermediate, the text books being Chardenal's "Second French Course,"'' and Edmund About's " La Mere de la Marquise " (Hachette's series of " Modern French Authors," vol. 1), Mr. VVhitcombe's primer being used for viva voce exercises in pronunciation. As announced elsewhere, Mr. Spurgeon will deliver his lecture on Dr. Judson this evening at the Y.M.C.A. at 7.30. A large oil painting of Dr. Judson, executed specially for this lecture, will be exhibited ; also a map showing the travels of the missionary.
