THE MINERS' STRIKE.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Newcastle, August 29. The miners on strike are making efforts to induce the Southern men also to go out. A number of those who went out on strike here have accepted work in the coal mines in Tasmania and Queensland.
Arrangements have been completed by Messrs. Stone Brothers with the Greymouth Coal Company for the forwarding to Auckland of 3000 tons of coal for the Auckland Gas Company. Further supplies will be received for the coaling of the Colonial Union Co.'s steamers, for which Messrs. Stone Brothers are agents, this arrangement, of course, being made additional to that contracted with the Kamo Company for the coaling of the s.s. Balmoral Castle. With respect to a current rumour that a strike is impending amongst the West port coal miners, consequent on the Newcastle dispute, Messrs. James and Co. state that when they telegraphed recently to the Tyneside Colliery Company, Greymouth, they received a reply to the effect that it was probable that should coal be shipped to Australia in large quantities, the West porn miners would go out on strike. Some of the Tyneside mines have since passed into the hands of the Union S.S. Company, and Messrs. James and Co., have not received further communications on the subject. It will be seen from our advertising columns that fifty good colliers are advertised for by the Coalbrookdale Company at Westport. This shows clearly that strenuous efforts are to be made to increase the output to meet the demand in Australia, caused by the strike at Newcastle.
