DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT INVERCARGILL.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Invkrcarg ill, Wednesday. Mr. Alexander Darling's fellmongery near town was burned down last night. About five p.m. the chimney of Darling's residence, close to the works, caught fire, but the flames were extinguished, and everything made apparently safe. A spark from the chimney must, however, have lodged in the roof of the shed nearest the house, for about half-past six a fire broke out at that particular spot, and spread rapidly. The eight sheds of which the works were composed were soon destroyed. The residence and stables were saved, and a few bales of wool were got out of the burning building. Most of the bones, of which there were about £500 worth in stock, were left untouched; but the valuable machinery with which the works were fitted, including a new bone mill and engine, a large boiler, and two tallow digesters, were more or less injured. Mr. Darling estimates that the stock of material on hand was worth at least £1000. The property was insured for about £1200 in the New Zealand office.
