CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The regular meeting of the Committee was held last evening. Present: Mr. W. Gorrie (chairman), Messrs. Farrell, Ussher, McMasters, Blades, and Dr. Walker. Removal of Teachers.—The secretary of the Board wrote intimating that Miss Sinclair and Miss Cleveland were withdrawn from Beresford-street School, leaving a staff equal to regulation scale. It was proposed to appoint Miss Cleveland to Albert-street School, that the teaching of singing might be resumed. He consulted the Committee regarding these proposals, and enquired whether they had any suggestion to offer. The letters were received. Exclusion of Late Scholars. — Mr. Worthington wrote re dismissing for half day such children as were late, that it was always his custom to require strict punctuality and to dismiss for the half day all who were habitually late, and a written reason was sent to the parents. Miss Warne also replied to the inquiries of the committee on this subject, and all held that the plan was most successful in promoting punctuality. The reports were received. Over-age Pupils.—The secretary of the Newton School Committee wrote that they carried out the wishes of the City Schools Committee by not accepting over-age pupils from other districts, but did not see their way to dismiss those of their own districts, as they were only four in number. Leave of Absence.— Leave of absence was granted to Miss Eliza Dunning, of Wellesley-street school, on the score of ill-health. The application was recommended by the head-master and supported by a medical certificate. Mechanical Drawing Class. —The members of this class petitioned that the class should be held in Wellesley-street School. The application was recommended strongly, as the situation would be more central, and would enable pupils from the North Shore to attend. On the motion of Mr. Farrell, the request was acceded to. Conference of Teachers.—Mr. Purdie asked for the use of the Wellesley-street School for a conference of teachers, to be held in September. The permission was granted.
