PRICES OF PRODUCE IN SYDNEY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, From time to time your columns contain cable reports of prices ruling in the Sydney market for produce of all descriptions. Now, I would point out that the unsophisticated producer is apt to be misled in these quotations, and it is often remarked that shippers must be obtaining abnormal profits, when prices paid here for the products are compared with those reported as ruling in the Sydney market. The excessive discrepancy, however, is satisfactorily explained when it is published that the New South Wales import duty on some lines is as follows : — Butter, Id per lb ; cheese, 2d per lb; bacon, 2d per lb; hams, 2d per lb ; malt, 9d per bushel; oatmeal, 2s per bushel.— am, &c., Merchant.
