The Austrian Government have intimated their willingness to abolish sugar * bounties if the American and Brazilian Governments will agree to the same course. The French Government alone objects to sign the agreement. If France persists in opposition to the bounties agreement, the other Powers will sign the treaty on Thursday next, thus isolating France. FRENCH NAVAL MANOEUVRES. Paris, August 24. It is explained that the order given by Vice-Admiral Krantz, Minister of Marine, for the equipment of several gunboats, was in connection with the proposed naval evolutions, similar to those recently carried out by the British Government. NEW CABLE TO AUSTRALIA. London, August 23. The Eastern Extension Cable Company have decided that the third cable which they intend to lay between Java and Australia shall land in Robuck Bay, the northern portion of Western Australia. THE AUSTRALIAN CRUISERS. London, August 24. It is expected that the cruisers in course of construction for the Australian squadron will be completed in eight months. MR. BRAD LAUGH TO RESIGN. London, August 24. Mr. Charles Bradlaugh, member for Northampton, has expressed his intention of resigning his seat in Parliament, as he is unable to afford the expense. ANTI-GERMAN FEELING. Zanzibar, August 23. A. strong feeling against Germany is being manifested here. STATE COLONISATION. London, August 24. • The Marquis of Lothian, Secretary for Scotland, has requested Mr. W. L. Rees to explain his colonisation scheme to the Parliamentary Committee appointed to inquire into the best means of promoting State colonisation, with a view of emigrating crofters to the colonies. MR, W. L. REES' COLONISATION SCHEME. London, August 23. Mr. W. L. Rees has made a request to the Imperial Government that they should guarantee 3 per cent, upon £1,000,000, to be raised with the view of assisting colonial colonisation. Lord Knutsford has referred the proposal to Mr. Goschen. Mr. Rees will shortly commence a series of lectures in England, and is announced to address the British Association at Bath, and tli' Trades Congress at Bradford.

ORLEANIST BANQUET. Paris, August 24. A banquet was held in this city this evening to celebrate the anniversary of the birthday of the Comte de Paris. M. Daudiffret Pasquier, in a forcible speech, denounced the system of .Republic Government, and said a Monarchical Government would be the only salvation of France. Prince Bismarck has resigned the portfolio of Commerce and Industry in the Prussian Ministry. THE ROBBERY OF BONDS. London, August 24. Ten thousand pounds' worth of bonds, stolen from a city firm in October last, have been recovered. The thief, a, lad named Casey, recently confessed to the robbery, and supplied information as to where the bonds were to be found. ' THE PARNELL INQUIRY. London, August 24. It has been decided to conduct the proceedings in the Times Parnell Commission in public. GLOVE CONTEST. San Francisco, August 23. A glove contest between Tom Meadows, light - weight champion of feydney, and Billy Mahon, a local lightweight, took place to-day, and resulted in a victory for the Sydney man.
