THE LAND SYNDICATE AND THE BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l have been asked the cause of the unseemly exhibition at the Official Assignee's office on the 22nd instant, when the Bank of New South Wales was 'for .• the time being thwarted in what we termed persecution. Permit me, Sir, to say that the unfortunates had been requested to furnish the Official Assignee with a statement of , their dealings and transactions for the last three years, ana submit them. This was done and verified on oath without any further investigation or enquiry from us. Mr. Ivey, by his resolution, wanted the whole thing re-opened, and further enquiry made at-a public examination, to be held before the Judge in the Supreme Court. Now, sir, we have nothing to fear from the most complete and searching examination. I speak positively for myself; yet, when this course is only adopted when', a debtor has been guilty of misconduct ap-, proaching to criminality I protested, and do protest against ouch an implied slur without) knowing somethimg of the wherefore, and this can only.be. after either refusing to di«.
close or concealing something required by the Official Assignee or the creditors. ... The bank being so far our only creditorthe others not even taking the trouble to prove against m> — who having .placed us in . this unfortunate position, treat us in the most insulting and cruel manner, even to putting bailiffs into our houses, I think, sir, our friends will not be surprised if we resent further indignity when our only crime has been that- we ware over-sanguine as to the continued advance of Auckland. Our other creditors suffer, but only one persecuted, and this persecution wo resist. Had we prospered hie would have participated in our prosperity, but failing be must not act the Shylock if we can avoid it. Shylock cared less for his money than the gratification of revenge.— am, etc., GSAVIS AICKJQf.
