BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The ordinary meeting of the Board of Edu cation was held yesterday. Mr. J. H Upton presided, and Messrs. R. Udy, J. M. Lennox, Theo. Cooper, S. Luke, and J. W. Carr were also present.
Chairman's . Report.The chairman reported that application had been made to the Commissioner of Crown Lands for reservation of the site selected for a school building on Mr, Baylies' leasehold at Hukerenui South. The Te Raliu school has been again closed 011 account of the prevalence of diphtheria. Mr. James Collier, A., head-teacner Alexandra school, had forwarded his resignation. Mr. G. F. Grierson had received permission to visit the town schools. The consideration of applications from Miss J. Davis and Messrs. G. M. Burlinson, J. F. Dixon, and J. Graham, in respect of salaries, was deferred until the. next quarterly adjustment of salaries. 'The report was adopted.
School Grant.—lt was decided to increase the Newton school grant by £25, on the ground that there was an- extra number of school buildings in this district.
Painting.—-The Board resolved to grant half the cost of painting Warkworth school.
Mischievous Schoolboys.—Mr. Saton, St. Aubyn Road, Devonport, wrote complaining that since the playground had been opened in the Devonport Domain, the boys were in the habit of tnrowing orange-peel and scoria into his garden, but as if this was not enough, they had now taken to dropping scoria on to his fowl# as they were sitting close to the fence. He suggested that a seven-foot fence be erected by the Board at a distance of two or three yards. It' was resolved that the letter be sent to the Devonport Committee, and that Mr. Saton be informed that all communications of this kind should come through the Committee.
Appointments.— was agreed to submit the name of Mr. Hill to the Alexandra Committee, as head-teacher, in place of Mr. Collier, resigned; that Mr. Dean be appointed ot> the Lower- Matakana school, and Mr. Campbell to the Maungatapere school. Other appointments were' considered in committee. Routine business was transacted, and the meeting terminated.
