A sensational scene occurred recently in the courtroom at Dordogne. A poacher named Raymond was on trial for the murder of a young girl, Marguerite Gonthier. The circumstances were most peculiar. Raymond had loved Marguerite for years, but, on account of his shiftless life, his suit had been in, vain. .Rendered desperate by this ill-fortune, he publicly declared that he would win his sweetheart by fair means or foul, and a few days later' he carried out his threat. Chancing to meet Marguerite in the woods, he demanded a kiss, which was promptly refused. Then seizing the girl roughly, Raymond cried, " Marry me, or die." " I will die," was the fearless answer, and, maddened with passion, the would-be bridegroom discharged his gun full in .the face of hi§ lady-love, whose death was instantaneous. In the trial the murderer wept continuously, and pleaded that the act had teen done in a moment of madness. He was condemned to twenty years' hard labour. . A man in Utah who has only one wife is talked ,of as "comparatively speaking, a bachelor.". ' . The new tariff will considerably increase the price of drapery and clothing.
