DISTRESS IN DUNEDIN.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Dunedin, Friday. The Secretary of the Labour Exchange reports to the Board of Advice that in the whole history of the provincial district there never was such a scarcity of labour for all classes of workmen as during the last four months, and there is no appearance of any change for the better, for farmers, public bodies and other employers of labour, are doing with as few hands as possible. , , There arc no works of a public or private nature . going on in the city or suburban districts excepting relief works, which are now nearly full, handed; Many, respectable families in the community are suffering in silence, being unwilling to parade their necessities before the public, in consequence of the inability of the breadwinners to find employment. It was decided to telegraph to the Government, explaining the urgent necessity for putting the Middlemarch section of the Otago Central Railway in hand at once.
