TAURANGA ITEMS.

[by telegraph—own correspondent.]

Tauranoa, Thursday. At the Police Court to-day, a lad named Albert Johnston was committed for trial for Btealing £9 from Captain Austin, of the s.s. Douglas, on the last trip of the steamer from here to Opotiki. The lad came down as a stowaway, and represented that he wanted work, and Mrs. Maxwell, of the Elms, gave him temporary employment. After being at work for three or four days for Mrs. Maxwell, he requited her, kindness by abstracting a watch and chain, diamond ring, and other articles, to the value of over £45, on a charge for stealing which he has to appear before the Police Court to-morrow. The accused is said to be a training school boy, and known under other names than the one he gave when he first came here. A football match was played this afternoon between the local team and Rotorua. The latter consisted of Maoris. The captain of the visiting team won the toss, and decided to protect the western goal, and with a fresh wind in their favour. It was reported that the Rotorua team was a strong one, and would take some beating, and by appearances when stripped and on the f aid with their gay uniforms, white jersey with scarlet band running over the left shoulder, and across the body under the right arm, they looked dangerous. After the first ton minutes the visitors were done. Evidently the warm water of the Lakes is weakening. The Tauranga won by 24 points to nil. The tries were obtained by H. Tanner (4), S. Tanner (3), J. Tanner (1), J. Jordan (2), H. Mansel (1). Prom the 12 tries obtained six goals were kicked.
