OPOTIKI ROAD BOARD.

The general monthly meeting of the Opotiki Road Board was held on August 9. Present: Messrs. S. Moody (chairman), A. Hedley, D. .Smith, and Thomas Dawson. Replies to lust month's correspondence were read, discussed, and approved. The following tenders were received for the bridge over the Tarawerawa Creek, Waiotahi :— Abbot and Lee, £55; John and VV. Parkinson, £52 5s ; T. (». Savage, £58 14s (informal). Mr. Hedley proposed and Mr. Smith seconded, " That the lowest tender, namely, Messrs. J. and VV, Parkinson's, he accepted." Mr. L itch field presented an estimate of the nature and cost of the work of reducing the grade of the l'airata cutting, near Mr. Talbots farm, stating that the probable cost would be £7 or £8. C/onsiderable discussion ensued, and it was finally resolved, " That the matter be held over until the expiration of Mr. Talbot's present maintenance contract, and then rediscussed.'" The bad state of the W'aioeka ami Otara Road was then discussed at considerable length. Mr. Moody pointed out the immediate necessity for some repairs to tlie far end of the Waioeka Road, beyond Mr. Hood's; also, that portion beyond McAllion's farm, leading to the schoolhouse. Messrs. Dawson and Hedley thought that the main portions of both the main roads, where the most traffic occurs, should be attended to first. The following accounts were received and considered :—S. Bates, advertising account, J.;f Is 6d; C. Hennessey, July surface work, £0 5s 3d. The above were passed for payment. Mr. Dawson called attention to the necessity for the formation of a piece of road leading to Mr. F. Maxwell's deferred payment section on the Tableland : also, re metalling a portion of road from Mr. Ronald's to Mr. Steele's farm. The clerk reported that certain plans had been laid down for the further protection of the Otara River embankment near Mr. Steele's; also, that Messrti.^ Steele and Ronald had kindly felled a large fir tree, and placed it in the river in such a position as to divert the current and partially protect the embankment. Mr. Moody reported several bad holes requiring immediate attention near Messrs. Howell's and Appletou's; also, on the cross road between Dr. Reid's and Mr. Addises'. Resolved, "That the surfaceman attend to these at once." The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.— [Own Correspondeat. j
