[BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT.J Thames, Tuesday. An accident happened this afternoon to Patrick Trainor, contractor for Tapu-Wai-kawau road, by the accidental explosion of a hole charged with blasting powder. He was burnt about the face and hands, but not seriously. The man Davis, who was seriously assaulted by his wife on Saturday night, is progressing very favourably towards recovery. The Thames Town Clerk (Mr. F. C. Dean) is doing his utmost towards securing a . suitable representation of the mining industry at the Melbourne Exhibition. An owner of a private claim mentioned to Mr. Dean that he could place at his disposal for the purpose of an exhibit six tons of quartz of good quality, and the Town Clerk promptly despatched the following telegram to Mr. Seddon, Chairman of the Goldfields Committee of the House of Representatives : —"Can get six tons of quartz one breaking down ; estimated 40ozs gold in the lot. Will Government guarantee to return it, or will Government crush it free at the Exhibition." In reply to this, Mr. Dean received the following wire from Mr. Seddon :—" The committee have reported, and recommend that provision be made to give effect to your offer. I have handed your telegram to Mr. Gordon, Inspector of Mines, the matter being left to him to deal with." Mr. Dean then despatched the following telegram to Mr. Gordon :—" Received a telegram from Mr. Seddon that the matter re six tons of quartz has been left to you to deal with. Kindly reply if lam to secure it on condition, as per my telegram. Must know at once." .No reply has as yet been received to the last telegram sent by Mr. Dean.
