Te Aroha, Tuesday. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here to-day about ten minutes before eleven o'clock. It lasted only two or three seconds, and was accompanied by a faint rumbling sound. [press association.] Wellington, Tuesday. Efforts to form a company in Wellington to work the marble deposits at Motueka have not been a success, and Mr. Henry Black has been despatched to Melbourne for the purpose of taking steps in that direction.

Christchurch, Tuesday. It has been showery from the south-west to-day. Several small landslips are reported from Governor's Bay Road and Lyttelton. No serious injury has been caused. In one instance some houses at Lyttelton were damaged. At the inquest on Frank Perott, found dead at Hurunui yesterday, a verdict was returned, " That death resulted from heart disease."

Invkrcargill, Tuesday. After being twice tried, Sophia Kidd was found guilty in the Supreme Court on a charge of having received a number of cattle, knowing them to have been stolen. The jury added a rider, recommending the accused to clemency. His Honor said it was not a case for the application of the Probation Act, and sentenced her to twelve months' imprisonment, with hard labour. As accused left the dock, and moved to the door, she fell down in a fainting condition. G. F. Dejoux was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment for embezzlement of the monies of the North Invercargill Corporation, the amount of which was said to be £1300.
