THE FRENCH ESCAPEES.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington-, Sunday. Mr. Jellicoe, acting on behalf of Gasparini, the French recidiviste, who is being taken to Sydney by the Wakatipu, has cabled to Sydney, instructing his agents in that city to move for a writ of habeas corpus as soon as Gasparini arrives. The application will be made upon similar grounds to those advanced in the Supreme Court here, and which the Court refused to uphold. Mr. Morison, counsel for Cury, intends to apply to the Government to defray Cury's passage back to Auckland. 1 understand that the Government are willing to do this. Detective Walker left to-day by the Wakatipu, for Sydney, in charge of Gasparini, where he expects to hand over his charge to the officer appointed by the New South Wales Government for taking back French escapees to New Caledonia. If this is not done, he will go on with Gasparini to New Caledonia. Count d'Abbans, the French Consul, has appointed Detective Walker temporarily a chief military warder in the service of the French Republic, and has behaved in the most liberal manner to the detective, offering to defray the expense of a second man with him, if necessary, as a relief, and to spare no expense required in the execution of his duty.
