Yesterday was a busy day on the wharf, owjucr to the discharging of the ship i J iako aii'l the s.s. Ohan of their respective cargoes, while the numerous coasting steamers that arrived also helped to keep the stream of carts and men going. The s.s. Ohau, as usual, had excellent despatch with her large fright of brcadstuffs, produce, and grain, and got away again for Greymouth about 4..'30 p.m. At an earlv hour yesterday the Northern S.y. Co. 's Clansman got in from Russell and Northern ports, with a. large number of passengers and a cargo ot produce. At 7 p.m. ►She left for Tauranga. 'J'he brigantine ika Vuka was hauled out into the stream yesterday, but did no' get :iway for Greymouth until early this morning. For Mercury Bay and East. Coast ports the schooner Wriapu sailed yesterday morning. .She took in tow a small steam launch which has been purchased by a settler for traffic on the East Coast ports. Now that the ship Pleione has been successfully floated, efforts arc being made to have the barque Weathersfield, which lies high and dry 011 the same beach, got off and repaired. It is anticipated that the work will not be one of any great difficulty. 1 :ie barque Presto was yesterday taking in ballast, having I,eon entered outwards for Melbourne, whither she goes via the Kaipar.i, at one of whose ports she will fill up wit timber.

Ihe schooner Flee twin arrived from Liiissell yesterday with 90 tons of coal, Wharf s 1S discharging at the Railway \\ liarf.

Yesterday evening, alwut 'seven o'clock, the s.s. Wellington took her departure for »» hangarei with a good number of passengers and cargo. Jhe fona sailed for Mercury Bay, and the Douglas tor Opotiki and VVhakatane.

The Auckland-owned barque Notero sailed yesterday from Newcastle for Lyttelton with a full cargo of coal. From Lyttelton the barque Helen will shortly arrive at this port, having sailed yesterday. On July 28 the barque Clifton, which left Mercury Bay for Melbourne recently, put

into Sydney for fresh water. Rough weather had been experienced, and the sea flooded the decks and cabins, washing away a portion of the bulwarks, besides causing the watertank to spring a leak, and the cargo to shift. . The Jubilee S.S. Co.'s Stormbird arrived last night from her usual Northern trip, with I a good number of passengers and a quantity . of gum, hides, and skins. A comparison of the grand passenger steamers of the leading steamship companies with the average vessels of Her Majesty's ' Navy exhibits a melancholy contrast. The ! steamers of the Cunard line, the White Star, the lnman, Peninsular and Oriental, Donald Currie, Orient, British India, Anchor, Star, Glen, and other lines do not publish the fallacious performances of their vessels by the measured mile, but they travel at a uniform , rate of speed which eclipses the crawling pace of such vessels of the Royal Navy that one chances to meet when voyaging, and as one flies by these tortoises it is impossible not to be sceptical in the belief that in Hie event of war they are to be our sole protectors. The latest is a proposal to form a volunteer navy to consist of all large lines of British steamers, which would be fully armed, and carry on a regular system of drilling at the guns by their crews. It is considered possible to have a volunteer navy of '200 vessels which in time of war would at a day's notice be ready for active service.
