THAMES NEWS.

[FROM our own correspondent.] Thames, Monday. I understand it is definitely decided not to again resume operations on behalf of the new Kauri Timber Company at the Shortland sawmill, but that the logs obtained from the Kauaeranga bush will instead be taken up the Thames river to the company's mill at the Junction. It is quite likely, however, that the machinery at the Shortland mill will be removed and erected at the river mill should business warrant such a proceeding, in which case a larger working staff will have to be employed at the latter place than at the present time. This step will give increased facilities for shipping the timber, for attached to the river mill is a wharf at which vessels of 16 feet draught can readily take in a cargo of timber, whilst to load timber from the Shortland sawmill, it has to be carted **> either the Shortland or Grahamstown Wharves, and then shipped in light draught vessels, which in turn have to tranship to larger vessels lying either in the Gulf, or in Auckland harbour. The saving that will be effected in this respect alone is expected to more than recoup the cost incurred in towing the logs from the Kauaeranga up to the Junction. A very pleasing incident took place yesterday at Tararuin St. John's Church, with which Mr. H. C. Lawlor has been so intimately associated for the last 16 years. During that long period he has filled the office of lay reader, conducting the services of the church regularly every Sunday, and in other ways affording the Rev. F. G. Evans much valuable assistance in the work of the parish. As Mr. Lawlor has for many reasons been obliged to discontinue his connection with the church, the members of St. John's Church, in recognition of hisservices, yesterday presented him with an address expressing theirdeep regretat losing him, and their appreciation of the faithful manner in which he had laboured with them •as lay reader. The address, which had been engrossed by Mr. Wolff, one of the churchwardens, was presented by him on behalf of the church, to Mr. Lawlor, who in a few suitable words thanked the members for this token of their appreciation of his services.
