THE SIEGE OF ORAKAU.
[BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. An interesting account of the siege of Orakau is to be printed here by private subscription of members of the House. The matter arose in this wise : A Waikato chief, named Hitiri Te Paerata, of the Ngatirauawa and Ngatikohera, is at present here in order to see about a re-hearing of the Polio Taupomutia block. He was one of the actors in the siege of Orakau of the 31st of March Ist and 2nd and of April, ISO 4, where his father, brother, two uncles, and a number of distant relatives, perished. Major Jackson and Mr. Bruce, of Rangitikei, coming to know of Hitiri's presence in Wellington, induced him to give an account of the siege in the interpreter's room, Captain C. Mair presiding, and a number of members of the Legislature being present. He gave a very graphic account of the circumstances which led up to the King movement, and then described the siege, recounting some incidents hitherto unknown, and the reason which induced the natives to select the site for a pah. As to the origin of the famous phrase, " Ake ! ake ! ake !" lie states that the phrase was first spoken by llipuraia, of the Urewera, Rewi, of the Ngatinianiapoto, and his (Hitiri's) father, Te l'aratea, and subsequently was used as a chorus by the garrison. This new contribution to the history of the famous siege of Orakau will j be looked forward to with interest.
