AUCKLAND ASYLUM.

[BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. While on the Estimates to-day, Mr. Goldie called attention to the anomalies in the salaries of the medical superintendents. In Auckland the medical superintendent got £500, while the oflicer at Christchurch, with a smaller number of patients) got £600. The Colonial Secretary said the Auckland officer had been getting £400, and had been raised to £500. He was managing the Asylum economically, and if matters went on favourably he would probably be levelled up. Mr. Goldie said he called attention to the matter not to level up the Auckland man, but to reduce the Christchurch otlicer, as £500 was quite sufficient for the duty. Mr. Monk said there were Auckland gentlemen giving their attention to that asylum'gratuitously, and he hoped their reports would not be ignored. The Colonial Secretary remarked that lie would have to be a perfect man to please the people of Auckland. Mr. Got.die thought the medical superintendent was an imperfect man, as the people of Auckland wanted to get rid of him, though the Colonial Secretary seemed to think him a satisfactory officer as he had reduced the expenditure. Mr. Hotnts remarked that the InspectorGeneral appeared disposed to ignore the reports of the official visitors, and to pay more attention to the representations of a martinet, who bounced and threatened people. A slate of things was growing at the Asylum which would necessitate the intervention of the Government. Mr. T. Thompson said he had a motion on the Order Paper, which went in the direction of an inquiry into the affairs of the Asylum. He was sorry, therefore, to hear anything either for or against it. Anyone who would read the correspondence lately laid on the table could come to no other conclusion than that matters were not right in that institution. Mr. Goldie pointed out the anomalies in the pay of Northern and Southern Asylum officials, which Mr. Marchant corroborated ; after which the subject dropped.
