WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S GENERAL REPORT. The following general report from Mr. H. M. 'Wilson, county engineer, was read at the meeting of the Waitemata County Council, held on Friday evening ; — I beg to submit a general report for the month ending 3rd Augast. Unemployed.—The work is progressing satisfactorily on both roads. The deviation on Potters ilill will be completed in about a fortnight, the money allocated for the purpose being barely adequate. I have pegged off other alterations on this road, which will provide work for some time to come, but an additional grant will be required. However, the most difficult task has been accomplished in the deviation on Potter's Hill. Owing to there being fewer men employed on the Henderson-Valley Road, there is vet a considerable sum available, which will be expended in widening the road throughout, but it will be insufficient to make the road the proper width. SwAXSOX Falls Road.—l laid off the continuation of this road through Messrs. Meikle's and Sisam's properties, with reference to which letters will be read to-day from the two parties concerned, the gist of the storv being that Mr. Meikle has prevented Sir. Sisam from making use of the road that so large a sum has been expended upon by wedging up the Blip-rails. The iatter now wishes to receive instructions to make a gateway, and cut a track, thus avoiding collision with the former. Hunt's By-road, Swanson.—l have made arrangements with Messrs. Freeman, Hiat, and Taylor to construct a bridge, and make the necessary formation for the sum of £5, as directed, giving a fairly good outlet to the main road.

Re Petition from Swanson Settlers Relative to Road to the School.—When funds are available, I would recommend about 40 truck loads of scoria for this road. Estimated cost, £35. Re Mr. Kelley's Petition, Asking for Deviation on the Waikomiti-West Coast Road. —The alteration would both shorten and improve the road, but would incur perhaps a larger expenditure than what the Council would be prepared to give at present, the formation alone costing about £120. Re Outlet for Messrs. Panell, MeArtitt/r, Frost, a>l) Others to Ldcas' Creek. —I have examined the respective routes in question, and feel convinced that the road laid off by Mr. Weetman, which joina the old coachroad, will be the best outlet, although perhaps the most expensive. From the map it will be seen that it is shorter than the one along Mr. Davis's boundary. As it cannot be expected that the Council are going to expend a large sum for the few settlers interested, I can only suggest that a bridge, costing about £40, be constructed over the river in the meantime, leaving the rest for the interested parties to do conjointly. The circuitous and impracticable road through Mr. Davis' property should be closed, and the other taken along the boundary. Long Bay Road. —I have laid off the road between Captain Smith's property and the main road, as requested. Re deviation on the road between Waimaukd and Kumeu. —Mr. Upton, the owner of the land, wants £20 for the land severed, together with that comprised in the chain wide road. Considering the price excessive, I gave instructions to the contractor not to proceed until the Council signify their approval. Greenhithe Road.—l have been over the various routes suggested, but have not commenced the survey. I purpose doing thie in conjunction with the road survey for the Pukeatua Road Board. My time being occupied three days a week in supervising the road work at Waitakerei, I have not been able to complete the detail survey of the Wainui-Kaukapakapa and Mairetahi Koad, which are so far away from the other work I have been engaged upon. I hope, however, to have them ready by the next meeting. Contracts Completed.—Road formation, Swanson (lueeinan). Kaukapakapa Bridge, etc. (Simcoeks), deviation Huia Road (Higham) and carting brickbats, New Lynn (Hjll) have been completed during the month.
