THE 'FRISCO SERVICE.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—speciaI correspondent.] Ellington, Friday. The Premier has promised Mr. Ward, who has taken an active interest in the proposed abolition of the 'Frisco service, that some time next week will be lixed for the discussion of the vexed question as to the renewal of the service. Should unforeseen circumstance intervene to prevent the fulfilment of the promise, then the Premier pledges himself absolutely to bring the matter before the House ere the session closes. Mr. Peacock is still sounding the members on the question, and is in hopes of securing a renewal, or, failing that, of also abolishing the Direct service, and leaving both services on their own merits. The question has been looked into as to whether members of the Legislature interested in the Direct Steam Shipping Company can vote, and it appears that they can. Being shareholders in a public company, it appears, is no bar to voting on questions in which that company may be interested. The Post thus comments on the situation : —" Noses have been very carefully counted over the San Francisco mail question, and it is found that there will be a decisive majority against any renewal of the contract. The Auckland members, finding the case, so far as regards their pet extravagance, a hopeless one, are now actively lobbying against the Direct mail service. They wish it to share the fate of the San Francisco service, but their efforts to undermine it arc no more successful than those made to save the other."
