THE WEATHER IN THE SOUTH
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION*.] HoKrrriCA, Thursday. Unusually heavy rains fell last night and this morning. A shock of earthquake, the most severe for many years, was felt throughout the district at twenty minutes to eleven last night, the direction being south-west and north-east. It lasted 2a seconds. Nelson, Thursday. Early this morning a very heavy easterly gale was experienced, and from the previous evening rain fell at intervals, but so considerable was the downpour that the rivers were flooded. The Maiti has now carried away both approaches to the East Bridge, and the West Coast coach is unable to come in. Before the rain there was much snow on the hills. It is feared that damage may have been done in the Upper Motueka, but) no reports are in.
