THE CITY ABATTOIRS.
With reference to the letter published in yesterday's issue from Mr. Currie, the Town Clerk and Sanitary Inspector of Newton, relative to the uncleanly state of the city abattoirs, Mr. P. Moyl.in, the inspector of i.lie abattoirs, sent to the Town Clerk, Mr. P. A. Philips, the following reply :— Sir, —Seeing a report from the Sanitary Inspector of Newton making gross misstate liienfs with regard to the abattoirs, I caiinoi allow them to go unchallenged, as they are both vicious and misleading to the Council and the public. The abattoirs are and always have been kept clean and in good working order, and under strict supervision and inspection. The sheep and bullock pens are always kept clean and tit for use. The abattoirs were in as clean a working condition as it was possible for them to be at the time, as there were fifteen bullocks hanging up dressed, and four others on the floor dressing, and also Mr. MeNair emptying gore-holes at the time of their visit. If the Mayor and Sanitary Inspector of Newton looked after the filthy state of the slaughter-houses and other establishments under their own control, where there is no inspection or supervision, there would be no cause for complaint, as there is nothing at the city abattoirs to create a nuisance or cause annoyance.
