NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The regular meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening, in the Council Chamber at Newmarket. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. W. Morgan, In the chair), Messrs. Bishop, Hogg, Wyman, Holmes, Kent, and Lowe.

Election.—The Returning Officer, Mr. James Pirie, wrote, reporting that he had advertised for nominations for councillors for the vacant; seat to be sent in on the '!3rd, but none had been received, and he had 'proceeded: to a fresh election. The letter was received.

Railway Gates. — Mr. F. J. Moss, M.H.R., Wellington, wrote : "I have seen Mr. Mitchelson re your letter about the railway gates, and he tells me that he has no available just now, but hopes soon to have, and will then undertake to put up the gates. I will write to you further when he lets me know definitely." The letter was received. i

Half-acre Reserve. — The Colonial Secretary wrote in reference to the halfacre reserve, stating the matter was being attended to in the Crown Lands Department. Received.

, Gbavel Pits.—Mr. F. J.'Moss, M.H.R, wrote on the 19th, enclosing copy of the Epsom and Mount Eden Recreation and Gravel Pit Reserve, and asking, " Will the vesting in a few Road Boards for their exclusive use of the land dealt with in the enclosed Bill at all affect Newmarket in obtaining gravel, or in any other way? The Bill has passed its second reading today, and will come on next Thursday. •• If there be any objection, telegraph to me." The clerk said he had consulted the Mayor and telegraphed to Mr. Moss on the matter, asking that Newmarket be included in the schedule with the other Boards.

Road ' Repairs.— Town Clerk of Parnell wrote, enclosing copy of the follow, ing resolution passed by the Parnell Council at its meeting on the 9th instant :— " That, provided the Borough Council of Newmarket will keep the Park Road and footpath jn repair, and that all balances of accounts (up to - the Ist January last) be cancelled, the Parnell Borough Council will keep the portion of Manukau Road that is divided between Parnell and Newmarket boroughs in repair." Mr. Whyinan said the proposition was that either Council should keep their own road and footpath in order. Newmarket would keep Park Road and footpath, and Parnell borough the Manukau Road and footpath also that Parnell must pay their portion of the lighting ; but, barring the lighting, they would let bygones be bygones, and he believed Mr. McLachlan understood it so. Messrs. Holmes and Kent said Mr. McLachlan understood it, for it was made perfectly clear and explicit. It was agreed to send a letter to the effect of the agreement entered into, that each Council should keep its own footpath in repair whichever road night be selected. • W orks foreman of works reported that Mrs. J add asked him to report a nuisance, the house drain having been stopped by Messrs. Brown and Campbell; also, he ■wanted ten loads of metal. Mr. Wyman said they could do nothing with it till a main drain is fixed. Mr. Bishop said it was a person complaining of a nuisance on her own property. The foreman of works Explained that the drain used to run on to Brown and Campbell's property, and this they bad stopped Mr. Hogg said she wanted the Council to drain her property. Mr. Wyman moved a letter be sent saving the Council was not able to do it Mr Bishop thought that Mrs. Judd ought to have notice to abate the nuisance herself Brown and Campbell had taken the proper course. If the lady had a nuisance on her premises it would be a nuisance to her neighbours, and this should not be allowed. Mr. Wyman'B motion was carried. Streets Committee.—Mr. Holmes said the work had been done in Morrow-street as ordered, and suggested that the extra 60 feet should also be done, and moved that the committee have wer to make arrangements accordingly, the cost not to exceed £3. This was agreed to. - Accounts.—Accounts were passed for ■ payment to the amount of £56 4s 9d. Annual Accounts.—The annual accounts for the year ending March 31, were laid on the table. The general account showed— assets, £632 6s 3d; liabilities, £638 12a.

Water supply account : Credit, £61 17s 3d; debit, £169 2s 3d. Interest and sinking fund account: Credit, £346 8s 6d ; debit, £35 7s 6d. Water loan account: Credit, £112 lis 9d; debit, £15 10s lid. Reserves, niL Public debt: Debenture water loan. £4000. •

Balances.—The balances weregeneral account, £344 3s; waterworks account (debit), £58 14s 2d; interest and sinking fund account (credit), £253 5s 9d; water loan account (credit), £24 lis sd. Inspector of Nuisances.— Mayor moved, "That Mr. Bruce be relieved of the duties of Inspector of Nuisances, and Mr. James Wilson, the turncock, be aptinted to that; position." He said Mr. race had all he could do to attend to the roads, and • the turncock had more spare time. It was not to cast any reflections on Mr. Bruce. There was no pay attached to the office. The turncock had no objection to accept the position. Mr. Wyman seconded the motion. Mr. Bishop moved, "That it be deferred till next meeting." Mr. Kent seconded this. Mr. Holmes supported the motion. Messrs. Bishop and Kent voted for the amendment. Messrs. Wyman, Holmes, Lowe, and the Mayor, voted for the motion, which was carried. Water and Gas Reduction. — The Mayor moved, " That the Town Clerk write to the Auckland Council, asking for a reduction of the price of water." Mr. Kent seconded the motion, and it was carried. The Mayor moved, also, " That the Clerk write to the Gas Company, asking for a reduction in the price of gas for lighting the borough." Mr. Hogg seconded the motion, which was carried. The Mayor said if they did not get a reduction in the price of gas they would have to extinguish some of their lamps. They must reduce the cost of lighting. It was more than they could bear. The motion was carried.

Notice of Motion.—Mr. Holmes gave notice of motion for the next meeting, " That the Council will in future charge a royalty fee of Is per. load for earth and metal taken out of the pit at the bottom of Morrow-street."

Fire Brigade.—Mr. Wyman said the Fire Brigade did good service at the late fire, and the insurance companies should be asked for donations. The clerk said the companies had been asked twice and refused. Mr. Wyman urged his proposition, saying if they refused let the companies pay for their own brigades. He thought if the suburban Councils united they could bring the companies to time. The matter laid over for a week, when it would come on as a definite motion. Mr. Bishop said that the companies had no business to put out the fires, and moved " That the thanks of the Council be given to the Brigade for the way they worked at the fire/' - This was carried.
