At the Police Court to-day a native, named Heta, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, with hard labour, in Mount Eden Gaol for the larceny of a silver watch. Two lads, named Thomas Henry and Frederick Ottole, were committed to the Industrial School, Auckland, on the application of their mother, who stated her husband had deserted hsr, and she was in indigent circumstances.

Christchurch, Thursday. At the inquest on William Walsh, who died suddenly at Southbridge, the jury returned a verdict of death from acute bronchitis, accelerated by exposure, adding a rider that the fact that he had been refused admission to the hospital should be brought under the notice of tne Hospital Board. The Charitable Aid Board yesterday, by seven votes to six, decided to retain the present master and matron of the Orphanage, with an injunction to exercise more discretion in regard to corporal punishment. Miller's bakery in King-street was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. Insurances : £550 in South British. The Jockey Club have reduced the stakes of the Hunt Club meeting to £520. Mr. Creswell was appointed judge, and Mr. Kett slipper at the Waterloo meeting. Sir Robert Stout suggests that the counties of mid-Otago should be constituted a Board of Works and endowed for building a railway. A three - roomed house at Rothesay, owned and occupied by S. Robson, has been destroyed by fire. Insured in the Equitable for £225.
