VILLAGE SETTLEMENT.

INTERVIEW WITH A MINISTER. NO HOPE OF GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday. I interviewed the Minister of Lands to-day respecting the question of further promoting the village settlement scheme, as indicated in the resolutions passed by the public meeting in Auckland. The Hon. G. F. Richardson informed me that the report of Mr. Kavanagh, the village steward, did not disclose all the aid furnished by the Government to the village settlements. Considerable assistance had been given, but as soon as the work bad been finished further appeals were made to the Government for continued assistance. There must come a time when that must cease, and self-support begin. The Crown lands report would show that £22,000 had been spent in that way. To my inquiry as to whether there was any probability of £10,000 being placed on the Supplementary Estimates, as suggested in the resolution, the Minister assured me that there was not the slightest prospect of
