Experienced southerly winds and moderate sea throughout. From Whangarei the s.s. Wellington arrived last night, with a large number of passengers and the..following cargo : —l5O ■'sacks gum and sundries. As considerable anxiety was manifested in shipping circles when the news of the Rebecca Crowell reaching New York in a damaged state was notified by cablegram, the following details of her collision, taken from the New York Herald, will be interesting : —" The 557 ton doubled-decked barque Rebecca Crowell was a sorrylooking sight when she made New York harbour from Auckland, New Zealand, yesterday. Her stem was gone clear to the water's edge, the forecastle-deck was missing, and everything swept clean from the decks. The bowsprit had been broken off short close to the knightheads, and the foretop- ' gallantmast, with all rigging attached, had disappeared. The truth is that the barque was in a collision off Barnegat in the fog on Saturday morning, but Captain Feyler, who related the mishap to a Herald reporter, was in total ignorance of the name of the other vessel. That it was a steamer he was certain, and that was all. The Rebecca Crowell was about 100 miles east of Barnegat at 15 minutes past 2 o'clock on Saturday morning, according to her captain's report. The barque was steering almost due north, but made slight progress in the light breeze. For some time before the collision the fog whistles of a steamer were heard and the Crowell's fog bell had been ringing continuously from the time the barque entered the fog bank. The-whistles of the steamer were suddenly heard on the starboard bow of the sailing vessel, and at the same time the latter's look-out sang out lustily— Large steamer on starboard bow! She's close aboard, sir! She's right on us !' Before an order could be given the huge black bull of the steamer hove in sight through the fog, and the next instant the barque was struck on the starboard bow. Down came the lofty foretopgallantmast, and for the time nothing was heard but the crashing of breaking timbers, snapping braces and ropes as the iteamer yards raked the barque fore and aft. But it was soon over, and the steamer disappeared in the impenetrable mist, without stopping a moment, Captain Feyler said, to ascertain the extent of the damage she had caused. The captain thought the steamer was a Boston vessel and bound for Savannah, but he could not be certain. The steamer was steering south-east when she ran into the barque. Captain Feyler said that only the fair weather prevailing allowed him to get into port, as his vessel was so disabled she would have gone down had a storm overtaken him. The report adds that, from circumstances which subsequently transpired, there is little doubt that the steamer which ran into the Rebecca Crowell was the Gates City."
