A NUISANCE TO PONSONBY.
— —O • — Yesterday forenoon, owing to complaints about an intolerable nuisance from a stencil prevailing over the western part of Ponsonby, Dr. Stockwell, health officer, visited the locality, along with Dr. Dawson. We understand that they have reported that an intolerable nuisance, injurious to health, is caused by decayed animal matter from Hellaby's slaughterhouse and manufactory being spread on the surface of the land. It is reported that a prosecution for this nuisance will be at once instituted by the city solicitor. The nuisance itself exists in the Newton borough, but the effect has been felt over a wide district. Mr. John 11. Hudson, of Sarsfield-street, writes as follows :—
On Monday and Tuesday last we experienced a most foul and sickly smell in the neighbourhood of Home Bay. It lasted the whole of those two days, and was certainly the product of exposed nijrhtsoil. It was very strong in Sarsfield-street, and reached beyond St. Mary's Road. On Tuesday evening it was disgustingly apparent in Jervois Road. This morning 1 have not noticed it, probably on account of a slight change in the wind. Where did it come from, and how is it to be stopped'!— questions for the Board of Health or their officers. That heroic measures should at once be taken to stop it is the only decision common sense can arrive at. If it is not prevented, and such a gas, containing the germs of disease, is allowed to float over the town, we shall he punished next summer by a visitation of fever, far more fatal and appalling than the typhoid of i&at summer.
