LYTTELTON ORPHANAGE.

THE USE OF THE CANE.

[by TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurcii, Wednesday. At a meeting of the Charitable Aid Board to-day an animated discussion took place re the Lyttelton Orphanage. The chairman of the Orphanage Committee stated that complain having been made that a girl 14 years of age had been severely punished he, with the Rev. Mr. Chambers, visited the Orphanage and examined into the matter. They found that the governess, undermaster, as well as Mr. Brownlee, headmaster, had been in the habit of inflicting punishment. This had now been altered as too severe treatment. The bruises on the children showed that some undue violence had been used. Other members stated that the children had been very severely caned, as was shown by the marks and scars on their hands. It appeared that ,on May 9 the committee requested the master and matron to resign. A month later, however, by the casting vote of the chairman, the committee carried a motion that they were to ba permitted to remain. It appeared that the members of the staff were much dissatisfied with the treatment they received from the master and matron. The Board adjourned the matter for a fortnight, to enable the members to look over the evidence taken at the inquiry into the subject held by the committee.
