SHIPMENT OF JERSEY CATTLE.
Mr. Richard Reynolds, of Waikato, forwarded yesterday a shipment of Jersey cattle to Australia by the s.s. Manapouri. The cattle, consisting of 17 head, were safely shipped early in the day. They include two bulls, two bull calves, six heifer yearlings, and seven cows. Some of these were originally imported from Jersey direct, including one bull and two cows, and are of the purest breed. The others are direct descendants of the imported stock, and purchased from Messrs. J. McCosh Clark and T. Morrin. They arc shipped as a speculation by Mr. Reynolds, in order to test the Australian market for this stock, and he accompanies the animals to attend to their treatment, &c. We may add that one bull, two cows, and a heifer were selected in Jersey by Mr. Fowler (who has the reputation of being an expert judge of Jersey cattle) as the best that could be procured. One object of the shipment is to have them ready for exhibition in Melbourne for the August, show. Mr. Reynolds informs us that the strains are not related to each other, and that farmers can continue to breed from them for years.
