HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The regular meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held last evening in the Board's offices, High-street. Present: Messrs. O. Mays (chairman), W. Crowther, M. Niccol, W. Atkin, E. Cooper S. Ambury, P. Dignan, R. Udy, A. Isaacs) arid Sturges. Hospital Reports.—The House Surgeon reported 53 males and 23 females in the Hospital at date. Deaths during the fortnight, two males (John Kerr and John Ross), and three females (Beatrice Grant, v! Elizabeth Bees ton, and Emily Grant). The House Steward ask'jd for the tanks to be renewed. Referred to House Committee. Miss Crisp reported that the nine nurses who passed their examination, held in April, had received their certificates. Refuges.—Mrs. Brophy reported she bad 13 bedridden cases in the different wards (males), and recommended that they all be placed in the old fever ward. She also said the wooden stretchers wanted replacing by ■ iron bedsteads. Referred to tie House Committee. There were 73 males and 22 females in the Upper Refuge. Mr. Walters reported 45 males and 14 females in the . Lower Refuge. House Committee.—The House Committee reported they had accepted the following tenders :Groceries for Hospital and Refuge, Robert Rew; printing (general), Messrs. Wilsons and Horton. Drugs: Upon examination of the drug tenders and estimating the probable requirements of the current year, the committee find a difference of about £15 for the year in favour of Messrs. Sharland and Co., whose tender they recommend for acceptance." The report was adopted. Wanted Information. — The secretary of the North Canterbury Hospital wrote asking how the Board dealt witn regard to persons who, having met with slight accidents—such as cute, sprains, bruises, etc.— desired hospital treatment, could be treated by _ private medical men in the neighbourhood, and were in a position to pay for it. It was resolved to give the information. Honorary Surgeon.Dr. Knight wrote accepting the appointment as Honorary Surgeon, in place of Dr. Macmullen, resigned. . ■■ - Interments.—Mr. Baines wrote saying that as he was going to Melbourne he found he would not be able to take up his tender for interments. The Board resolved to accept Mr. Garrett's tender, it being the next lowest.

Costley Institute.—A letter was read from Colonel Haultain, saving that the Minister of Education had declined to confirm the, offer of the trustees of the Costley Institute to take a number of boys which were at present chargeable to the Board at the Kohimarima SchooL The Chairman explained thai the boys were costing £18 at Kohimarama. The trustees of the Costley Institute bad agreed to take them for £15. From the correspondence read it appeared the reason of the Minister's refusal was that private 'institutes should nob be allowed to come rato competition with public institutes. Several members of the Board expressed themselves to the effect) that the Government ware acting very unfairly.. The matter was referred to the charitable Aid committee for the present, to take steps to have the matter brought before the House. The Chairman said the Board would in future object to pay more for the boys at Kohimarama School than they could get them boarded out for elsewhere.
