The Tasmanian Parliament has just added £100 a-year to the salary of the General Manager of Railways, Mr. F. Back, formerly manager of the Christchurch section of the New Zealand Railways,, and well known in the South. In proposing the increase the Minister of Lands highly eulogised Mr. Back, and said it would bo extremely difficult to replace him. Several other members also referred to his " valuable services," and "admirable mairigoment," which had saved the colony a h'S n sum of money and greatly increased tn* railway returns. The Colonial Treasuresaid it was far better to increase the salary of such a valuable office? than run the ris*. of losing him, as he had noticed in the .New Zealand newspapers that there was a desire to get him back again.
