Sir. —I am not at all certain that Mr. Vaiie's scheme, in its entirety, would prove a success, but I am quite sure that it could not prove a more disastrous failure than the present system. I reside twenty miles from Auckland ; the ordinary fare to Auckland and back is 5s Bd, i.e. 2s lOd each way; the return fare is 3s Bd, and I come to Auckland on an average about once in six weeks. I want to come about once a week if the fare was not so prohibitive, but I allow all my needs to accumulate until I must go, and then I part with the frxe with very much the feeling that I am being' rushed. Now, 1 believe for our distance Mr. Vaile would want about three fares for one under the present system. Well, in my case he would get at least six, and nune is not by any means an exceptions- cass ! rather the reverse. I think, further, that a. great deal of the grumbling .the management of our railways is caused by a^i m many instances) stupid rules, whi often framed with the view of consignors the maximum amoun with the minimum of accommodation.
