DARING ATTEMPT AT INCENDIARISM.

[BY TELEGKArH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] New Plymouth, Friday. A paring attempt at incendiarism was made last night, endangering a largo block of buildings in which the Criterion Hotel stands. Early this morning Mrs. Hosking, who keeps a crockery shop in Brougham-street, found her house full of smoke. She got up, and went and searched for the cause, and found that under the ground floor of the next shop had been placed a box filled with paper, which had been lighted. There was also half the sleeve of a coloured shirt, and two small pieces of candle, but neither, apparently, had been ignited. A wooden pipe was also found close by. The fire had not been rapid enough to catch good hold on the building, and on the alarm being given, the flames were quickly extinguished. Had a fire taken place, a large destruction of valuable property must have taken place, for tho premises of Mr. Cock (grocer), Mr. Wright (draper), Mr. Gilmour (stationer), and the Criterion Hotel were all endangored.
