In many respects Mr. Harrow is to be commended for the enterprise and pluck which he has shown in seeking—according to his judgment—to benefit the Lake district; but he should not allow his spleen towards Mr. Seaman, jun., on account of his advanced, temperance views—as manifested at the recenb elections of Licensing Commissioners and local option—to carry him into extravagant and unfounded statements, which statements are again reiterated by "A Ratepayer" in this morning's Herald. I believe I am correct in saying that Mr. Seaman, jun., never has received £30 for collecting £120 of rates, nor anything approaching it. Until last year he was, I believe, paid five per cent, commission on rates collected and £5 salary for clerkship; but last year, as the Board only levied a one-farthing-in-the-£ rate, they considered the remuneration insufficient, and offered him £30 per annum for the duties of clerk and collector. That gentleman, however, preferred to receive only £25; and when reappointed last month he offered to perform those duties and also to act as Returning Officer (which position his father offered to resign to assist the Board in retrenchment) for £20,—and his offer was accepted, and his services engaged for the current year on those terms.—lam, &c,
