[press association.] Wellington, Thursday. The cable repairing steamer Sherrard Osborae is again at work relaying that portion of the cable which she has repaired.. After completing the laying of this portion, she will pick up the further section and bring it on to Wellington for repairing. The Masons of the Wellington Calliope Lodge intend to honour the memory of the late Brother Emperor of Germany, by holding: a lodge of sorrow on Friday next. The ceremony will be most impressive. Sir George Grey opened the Wairarapa exhibition at Masterton this afternoon. He left town by the early train, and on arrival at the Masterton Railway Station he was met by 500 people. The Mayors of Masterton and Greytown were present. The volunteers formed a guard of honour. The Rev. Mr. Rowse read an address of welcome. Sir George Grey declared the exhibition open amid great success. The building was crowded. The weather wjis splendid. Sir George Grey proceeds to Greytown to-morrow. He delivers an address in Carterton en route.

Christchtjkch, Thursday. The dead body of a new-born child was found this morning in the room of a girl named Jane Morris, servant in the City Hotel.

In the Supreme Court to-day a verdicfi was given for the defendants in the caso of Benham v. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. The action was brought to recover £3000 for damages alleged to have been caused to the plaintiff's property through the negligence of the defendants' servants, in lighting a fire at Mount Torlace station in January, nexfe to plaintiff's Kowai Bush property.
