HAWKE'S BAY STEEPLECHASE MEETING. [by telegraph.—press association.] Napier, Thursday. The Hawke's Bay Steeplechase Meeting today was favoured with splendid weather, but the attendance was only moderate, about 2000 being present. There was good racing. The following are the results : — Maiden Steeplechase of lOOsovs. Two miles. Mr. T. Parotene's ch g Tikarere, aged, by Gladiator, 12st 131b (Redmond) ... 1 Mr. E. McElwain's b g Oddfellow (late Silver King), 12st 31b (Shearsby) ... 2 Long Roper also started. The horses were slow to move when the flag fell, but Long Roper was the first to show in front. The first jump, a post and rail and gorse obstacle, was taken by Long Roper about two lengths in advance of Oddfellow, who was separated from Tikarere by the same distance. Approaching the sheds Oddfellow began to go up, and he cleared the hurdle hfilf-a-length in front of Long Roper, Tikarere about five lengths in the rear. After getting over the jump Long Roper took command, and he negotiated the gorse two lengths in front of Oddfellow, while Tikarere had retired still further behind. Oddfellow made up hie lost ground as they entered tho straight, and at the water jump in front of tho stand he was only half-a-length behind. Long Roper led round, and at the double he was firsfc, four lengths in advance of Tikarere, and they ran in the same order to the stone wall, but in the straighb Tikarere, who was on the inside, gained some ground, and the pair rose to the last jump together, but Long Roper cannoned heavily, and fell, nearly bringing Tikarere down also. Redmond, however, steadied his mount, and Shearsby bringing Oddfellow up with a terrific rush got to Tikarere's girths as the post was reached, but the winner had a little in hand at the finish. Time, smin 11 3-sths sec. Dividends, £4 6s and £5 2s.

Miss Jackson ns ch g Martonian, 4yrs, by Sterlingworth, list 51bs (Mr. E. F. Chapman) ... ... ... ... 1 Miss B. Scally ns ch g Corsair, aged, 12ab (Mr. C. H. Chavannes) 2 Mrs. Wi Parata ns br g Miro, 6yre, 12st 3 Ival, Hermit, and Chief Mourner also started. Corsair and Martonian were first away, with Ival and Miro next, and Chief Mourner last. Corsair was at once taken to the front, and made play at a good pace, followed by Martonian three lengths off, and Miro six lengths in the rear of the latter. Passing the stand Martonian was a length behind, Corsair pulling double ; but at the back of the course Martonian went up, and the race was virtually over, as he increased his lead at every stride, and eventually passed the post, pulling up a winner by four lengths from Corsair, the same distance separating Corsair from Miro, who w-as third. Time, 3min 55 3-ssec. Dividend, £2 7s, £2 Bs.

Mr. Ellingham's b g Chemist, aged, by The Painter, 12st 61b (A. Ellingham) 1 Mr. Donnelly's blk g Mangaohane, 6yrs, list 51b (Hickey) 2 Mr. Ellingham's b m Denbigh, aged, lOst (Redmond) 3 Kangaroo, Magnesia, and Shillelagh also started. The nag fell to a capital start, of which Chemist got slightly the best, followed by Magnesia, Shillelagh, Denbigh, Mangaohane, and Kangaroo in thab order. Shillelagh and Magnesia wenb bo bhe van, and jumped the first hurdle bogebher, bub ab tho gorse Magnesia was first over, a length in front of Shillelagh, whose rider here came off, and was dragged some distance before he was extricated. The manuka fence was negotiated first by Magnesia, a length in front of Chemist, with Denbigh (a similar distance off) third, Mangaohane and Kangaroo aboub five lengths away. Magnesia and Chemist were abreast ab bhe water jump, leading Denbigh by three lengths ; bub Denbigh took second place behind Magnesia at the post and rail and gorse, while Chemist was close up, a good third. Denbigh and Chemist had a slight lead of Magnesia at. bhe stone wall, and the latter ran off ab bhe double posb-and-rail fence, Chcnnisb clearing ib aboub a length a-head of Denbigh, who had Mangaohane aboub two lengbhs in her rear, and Kangaroo a lengbh away, last. Denbigh ran up into firsb place, and led over bhe brush hurdle by bwo lengbhs from Chemist, bub bhe labber soon again supplanted the mare, and ab bhe gorse fence he had half a length the best of it. This order was maintained until bhe double post-and-rails opposite the stand had been cleared, when Denbigh once more assumed command, and jumped the post-and-rail and gorso aboub half a length in advance of Chemist. At the stone wall Denbigh had increased her lead to two lengths, and a shoub wenb up " Denbigh wins," but tho gallant little niiu'e had now nearly run herself out, and ab the double posb and rail Chemist was first by a lengbh, Mangaohane and Kangaroo being together two lengths behind. Chemist, running very strongly, had a three lengbhs , advanbage of Denbigh ab bhe gorse fence, Mangaohane— half a lengbh away—bhird, and making a great effort to get on terms with the leaders. Chemisb led over bhe sbone wall by a lengbh from Mangaohane, wibh Denbigh —bwo lengbhs off—third, and Kangaroo last. Tho horses remained in this order till the finish, for despite Mangaohane's challenge, Chemist won a grand race by a lengbh and a-half. Denbigh was five lengths behind, third; and Kangaroo, bwo length away, last. Time: 7min 37 3-sth sees. Dividends : £5 ss, £4 13s. Selling Steeplechase of 40 sovs. One mile and a-half.

Paratene's ch g Tikarere, aged, lOsb (Subherland)- 3 Arbisb, Mackersey, and Director also started. Won fairly easily by four lengbhs. Time, 3min fsec. Dividends, £3 4s and £2 9s. Erebus was offered for aucbion, bub failed to elicit a bid, and was passed ab £50.

The Onehunga Racing Club hold a meet)-' ing to-morrow afternoon on the new course at Potter's Paddock.
