NEW ZEALAND EDUGATIONAL INSTITUTE.
A very successful meeting of Waikato teachers waa held on Saturday last at Cambridge, to form a branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. The following teachers signified their intention of taking an interest in the movement:—Hamilton West: Meeera. J. M. Murray and F. E. Gaudin, Misses Hould and Barry. Hamilton East: Mr. P. l≤. Stevens. Cambridge East: Messrs. W. S. Stewart (8.A.). R. Jones, Parry, and Misa iiacky. Cambridge West: Mr. H. R. Hyatt, Missea Dillon and Nixon. RaHgiaohia : Mr. J. La Prelle. Hautapu : Mr. J. Ormsby. Whatawhata: Mr. J. B. Morgan, Pukerimu: Mr. Bruce. Mercer : Mr. C. T. Edwards. Huntly : Mr. R. J. Tolbot. Harapepe: Mr. C. Kornforth. Ohaupo : Mr. B. Bedford. Paterangi: Mr. ¥. C. Crookes. Morrinsville : Messrs. J. A. C. Lament and J. Miller. Alexandra : Mr. J. Collier (B. A.). Ngaruawahia : Mr. J. Chappell. Tamahere : Mr. A. Edwards. Taotaoroa : Mr. Clark. Kihikihi: Mr. Christie. Mr. W. S. Stewart was elected president, and Mr. A. E. Edwards secretary and treasurer, and Messrs. Murray, Hyatt, and Miss Hould managing committee. The formal business of pawing the rules having been accomplished, luncheon was kindly provided by Mrs. Stewart: after which the questions that affect teachers at the present time were freely discussed. The following resolutions were agreed to: — 1. " That this meeting records it* satisfaction with the statement made by the Premier in the House on Thursday last re the raising of the school age. showing that he has correctly diagnosed public opinion on this most important subject." 2. " That the payment of teachers' salaries on the 'strict instead of the ' working average , presses unduly on the teachers of country schools, and consequently that the Minister be requested to devise some more equitable method of retrenchment if this be indispensable." 3. " That such alterations bo made in the scholarship regulations as will make it possible for children attending other than town schools to compete with any probability of success." The next general meeting of the branch is to be held at Hamilton. After a vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Stewart for their hospitality, the mating separated.
