COLONIAL STOCKS.
TRUST INVESTMENTS.
ATTITUDE OF MR. GOSCHEN.
[press association.] rt
London, Jane 19. In the House of Commons, Mr. Powell moved a resolution in favour of the suitability of inscribed colonial stocks as trust investments, and the advisability of permitting such a course.
Mr. Osborne Morgan seconded the motion, and said colonial investments were superior to English, returned bettter interest.
Mr. Goschen said while desiring to assist the colonies, he was compelled to be extremely jealous of any trenching on the Imperial credit. He admitted the security of colonial stocks, but questioned the capacity of Judges to adjudicate with regard to the credit of the various colonies. All the colonies must be placed on equality, and England was unable to control colonial funds. Without wishing to disparage the colonies, they ought to pause before adopting the proposal.
The motion was withdrawn.
