CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT AGAINST A TOWN CLERK.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION;] Inveucaecill, Saturday* G. F. DE Joux, for many years Town Clerk of North Invorcargill, was charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court with embezzling eighteen shillings. He is remanded till Tuesday, bail being refused, the Crown Prosecutor stating that the total defalcations of the prisoner were very large. He had been under a cloud for a considerable time, and was superseded some months ago. Comment is made on the laxity of the audit and municipal management disclosed by the fact that in this cose, and the borough of Winton, the Town Clerk of which which is now in prison for a similar offence, the books have been manipulated for years without discovery, although the entire revenues of the boroughs are only a few hundreds a year.
