Ouit news from Berlin this morning will be read with poignant pangs of sorrow. In the Imperial Palace as Potsdam, the gallant and loveable Emperor of Germany lies on his deathbed, surrounded by the grief-stricken members of his family. Grim death, so long baffled, is at last about to conquer. The resources of medical science nave been exhausted, and there seems no human power that can now avert the swiftlycomingdoom.ThedyingEmperor, whose inipending fate has plunged a nation into deepest gloom, has borne his sufferings with matchless fortitude, and now awaits his end with Christian resignation. There is something ineffably touching in this sorrowful doeing of a life which was fraught with the promise of so much good, after the long and weary months of racking pain borne without a murmur, and when hope, so often darkened, had at length begun to shine more brightly. But like the gay-tinted bubble which brightens only to burst, this gleam of hope was doomed to be extinguished. In all likelihood the German Emperor is now no more. It is too early to speculate on the probable consequence of his disappearance from the councils of Europe. That they will be of a serious character no one can doubt. He was eminently a man of peace, and enlightened views. Had he been spared Germany and the world would have been the gainers. His son, who will succeed him, has a mind of a different mould. A lighting Holienzollern, the hope of the aggressive military party in Germany, rash and inexperienced, Europe may well watch his accession to the throne with anxious forebodings.
