THE SHOP HOURS' BILL.

TO THE EDITOK.

Sir,—There is no need to reply to the assertions in Mr. Gray's letter of to-day, except to remark that artificial restraints on trade such as those proposed in the Shop Hours' Bill tend to strengthen the strong at the expense of the weak, and do, as a matter of fact, interfere with the total volume of trade done, as well as with its distribution. Will Mr. Gray inform me on what grounds he makes the following statements : " Mr. Aldis would be quite agreeable to enforce the law against Sundaytrading, as he knows that it is for the greatest good of the greatest number."—l am, etc., W. Steadman Aldis. Auckland, June 6, 18S8.
