THE CHINESE QUESTION.

[PRESS association.] Sydney, June 7. The Legislative Council has negatived the indemnity clause in the Chinese Bill by a majority of 31 to 5. A new clause has been inserted indemnifying the Government for the acts of May 1, provided the persons are not deprived of their right of action before the passing of this Bill. Advices from Hongkong state that Governor Des Vceux has expressed indignation at the action taken in Victoria in keeping the Chinese out. The Chamber of Commerce passed resolutions against the restriction upon the Chinese, and merchants have written to the Chamber viewing the action as a direct infringement of the treaties between Britain and China. It has been suggested that China is powerless to check the influx into Australia, as the Chinese already here came from Hongkong, which is a British colony. The Chinese residents in the city are considering the advisability of requesting Sir Henry Parkes to allow their being represented at the forthcoming Chinese Conference. They state they are anxious to assist the Government in preventing any great influx of their countrymen. Melbourne, June 7. The report of the landing of Chinese at Twofold Bay is unfounded, and arose through some Chinese diggers in New South Wales crossing the border into Victoria. The police are instructed to prevent this in the future. Wellington, Thursday. The Wakatipu, from Sydney, with 60 Chinese, arrived at seven o'clock to-night, but as the Health Officer does not go off till the morning no communication was held with the vessel to-night.
