BEER AND LUNCHEON.

Edward Dawes was charged at tho Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr. Baddeley, R.M., with selling beer to one Abraham Hobson, on May 18th, without having a license, in violation of section 159 of the Licensing Act, 1881. Mr. Cotter appeared on behalf of the defendant, and pleaded guilty. He said while he pleaded guilty, he was not aware he was doing wrong. The defendant kept a restaurant, and advertised that he would provide a luncheon with a glass of beer or cup of tea for 6d. Constable Hobson went to the place and {jot his lunch and a glass of beer. Hobson told him then he was breaking the law, and defendant then said he would stop it, and did so. Mr. Cotter said everything was done aboveboard, and asked for a nominal penalty. Sergeant Pratt said ho believed that the defendant did sell the liquor without knowing he was doing wrong. The police did not press for a heavy penalty. Defendant was also manager of the Metropolitan Club, which adjoined his place. All the police desired was to make it a warning to other restaurant-keepers who had nob licenses that they could not supply beer with lunch. The R.M. fined the defendant 5s with 78 costs.
