THE CHINESE QUESTION.

ACTION OF NEW SOUTH WALES-

THE CONFERENCE.

ARRIVAL OF ANOTHER VESSEL.

[press association.]

Sydney, May 26. Government have decided to enforce the section of the Chinese Restriction Act of 1881, which precludes vessels from bringing more than one Chinaman to every hundred tons under a penalty of £100 a-head, and ship owners are to be notified that such enforcement will be enforced after to-day. Adelaide, May 28. The Premier has received intimation that Tasmania joins the Chinese Conference. Sir H. Atkinson would like the Conference to meet as soon as possible.

Sydney, May 27. The Government intend to apply for leave to appeal to the Privy Council against the decision of the Supreme Court for granting a writ of habeas corpus. The Changsha has arrived with a large number of Chinamen. Preparatory to the departure of the Menrnuir, leaving on Saturday, two of the Chinamen escaped, notwithstanding the precautions made by the Customs, who refused to clear the vessel unless the number of passengers were accounted for or had paid their fare of £50 each and poll tax. The vessel left, taking 34 back to Hongkong who were brought to the colonies.
